John Motson to retire from the BBC
At the end of the season after 50 years

Personally I find his trainspottery drivel tedious in the extreme and the preference of the BBC for him over Barry Davies for World Cup finals and major matches utterly bizarre.

Northern Sold - that commentator you referred to may have been Roger Tames. He did the commentary on Tyne Tees for a number of years.

Slightly off tangent my bugbear is the BBC (& probably others) using sports presenters on their news shows who obviously have no interest in or understanding of sport.
It's all just another presenting role for them towards their goal of hosting Strictly

The BBC use George Riley a bit who is a genuine rugby league fan amongst other sports and makes such a difference to the others.
Others = a bunch of Doris's

The woman they sometimes use makes my blood curdle. Just absolutely fucking awful.

True that sniper… deffo a dying art…. However some of the old one’s I’m not sure about… I recently watched an old The Big Match from 1977 on BT Sport… West Ham at Sunderland and we got smashed… the commentator (a Northerner) was the biggest piss taker I have ever listened to… calling us absolutely shocking, clown defending, calamitous keeping… the best was when with the score at 0-6… Brooking does a nice bit of skill…. “Trevor Brooking… what a player… imagine how good he could be in a good side”

Ha Ha ha… not sure you’d get away with saying that now…

I'm astounded at how hard it is to uncover good new commentators and their sidekicks.

ITV are obsessed with using hoddle. The BBC will basically only use ex Liverpool players and now any token woman they can get their hands on regardless of whether she's any good

Although rugby commentary of the bath game last weekend really scraped the barrel with Jeremy guscott gushing about how good he used to be (he has a very different recollection of his achievements from the rest of the world) and a woman with him who refused to use the term GAMESMANSHIP but just said GAMES-SHIP.

He has definitely got less excitable the last decade or so… he was great back in the 70-80’s … I just hope that SCREECHING woman does not take his place…

Re: John Motson to retire from the BBC
I have said this before on here. But just to re-iterate. I am good friends with someone who worked in the sports department at BBC and travelled to many major tournaments as part of the BBC sports team.

He will tell anyone who wants to know what a cunt Motson is. In his own words "A self righteous rude cunt". Says he always thought he was the main man and strutted around like he was god. Hugely disliked amongst BBC staff and know for being a true cunt.

On the flip side he always says what a genuinely honest, polite and friendly man Lawro is. Always had time for anyone and particularly decent to new or younger members of the team.

So there you go.

I've never particularly liked his commentary, particular that annoying chuckle thing he does but it is always a shame when one of the old school commentators goes.

Re: John Motson to retire from the BBC
Barry Davies was a posh cunt and talked a lot of bollocks. I remember he described the linesman as a "Somewhat avuncular figure, rather like a character in a Chekov play"

Most modern commentators are technically efficient but lack a bit of character

In his prime only Brian Moore came close. Barry Davis was OK for a toff cunt but was more suited to commentating on ponces dancing on ice

Not sure why I don't like him, maybe a bit irrational or maybe it's because he's worn the same fucking sheepskin jacket for the last 50 years?

I like him. Does the Monday evening footy discussions on radio 5 live quite often. He has great knowledge and combined with players etc makes for quite an interesting listen.

He lived in Redbourn in Hertfordshire same as Vinny Jones. Not sure if he still does though.

Don't really understand the venom for him on here. Takes me back to the days when i actually gave a fuck about football.

Re: John Motson to retire from the BBC
Wasn't Motson very quick in pointing out that Brooking had scored in the FA cup final and not as a lot of people assumed was Stuart Pearson?

Still a cunt though

Re: John Motson to retire from the BBC
Been watching some of those The Big Match replays they are showing on BT Sport from 1977…. 1st one we was playing Arsenal at Highbury… their team full of stars like Brady, Stapleton, Rice, Hudson, Armstrong etc… and we’ve got Bill Green and Anton Otwalakaowskiskiskiski… go one goal down… and typical West Ham end up winning with a peach of a diving header from Sparrow Taylor to nick the game 3-2… Kevin Lock and Mervyn day were superb… next week we go to Sunderland… and get beat 6-0 … with Lock and Day absolutely diabolical…. The daft as a brush Northern commentator made me laugh mind you…

“What a player Trevor Brooking is… imagine what he could do in a good side”

Ha Ha… anyway well worth a watch some great footage on there…
